The Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord War Sails expansion kicks off with Inquire at Ostican as the first quest to start this side campaign. While you won’t have to go anywhere to get it, you will have to progress the early main campaign quests for it to start. Upon completing the quest, “Find the Hideout of Radagos’ Gang and Defeat Them”, you’ll immediately get Inquire at Ostican. It appears at the same time as the Stealth Tutorial quest. Continue reading for the first quest walkthrough of our War Sails guide.

Travel to Ostican

After clearing Radagos’ hideout, a window labeled Troubled Waters will appear. It explains that you’ve overhead of a new pirate menace terrorizing the coasts of Calradia. In an attempt to track down where your sister ended up, you can head to Ostican to learn more about these pirates. If you choose to go there immediately after getting this window prompt, there’s a button that says, “Take me to Ostican now”. This will teleport you there instead of having to travel there manually.

It doesn’t matter if you choose not to and instead go there at a later time. Throughout the War Sails campaign, you’ll occasionally get an opportunity like this to save some time. Once you make it to Ostican, pick the “Go to the port” choice to look for more information. Before you can even wander the streets, a window appears and mentions that a fight is about to start.

Defend the Old Man Being Picked on by Bandits

After clicking continue, a short cutscene will trigger with some dialogue before a battle begins. You’ll hear the Sea Hound bandits threatening an old man named, Gunnar of Lagshofn. Once the cutscene ends, run over to Gunnar and help him deal with the three bandits. It’s okay if he falls during the battle, but you’ll then be on your own for the encounter.

Once the fight is over, Gunnar explains that the bandits are part of a pirate gang called the Sea Hounds. Despite once sailing with many of these warriors, he’s now going to war with them due to their bloodthirst. Speaking with him gives you a chance to learn more about the Sea Hounds and how they may be involved in your sister’s kidnapping. Also, he invites you to join him in his war. This gives you three dialogue options depending on what you want to do:

  • I will join you, and we can hunt together. – This starts the War Sails sea tutorial and continues the campaign.
  • Let me think this over. – This pauses the questline, giving you a chance to return later.
  • I have other obligations, and I already know how to handle a ship. (Skip tutorial) – As the choice says, this will continue the War Sails campaign but skip the sea tutorial.

Meet Purig at the Ostican Tavern

Assuming you’re still at Ostican, you can pick the town option to go to the tavern district. Then, visit the tavern and find Purig inside. Holding Alt on PC will reveal any important people nearby. Scan the tavern for someone with a little person icon above their head that has a yellow exclamation point as well. This will help you spot Purig in the corner, leaning against a barrel.

Speaking with Purig will add to what Gunnar already said about him offering to help against the Sea Hounds. However, he will mention that you’ll need to leave your companions and troops behind. This is the case for the entire Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord War Sails campaign since you’ll be given troops across each quest. Once you’re ready, a cutscene will trigger after choosing to sail with him.

This cutscene tells a short story narrated by Gunnar about the upcoming events. It also reveals that Purig is working with the Sea Hounds against Gunnar, and unfortunately, kidnapped the two of you. Eventually, you and Gunnar find an opportunity to escape, which leads to a little fight. This ends the Inquire at Ostican quest, leading to the next one, Break Free of Captivity. Fair warning, it can be a little difficult if your character is low level.
