How to Start the War Sails Campaign

When starting Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord on PC, make sure you have War Sails checked off under mods in the launcher. If it’s not active, you won’t have access to the campaign and content even if you own the expansion. Afterward, you’ll need to start a new campaign instead of playing in the Sandbox mode. While you will have access to new content like ships in the Sandbox, you won’t be able to do the quests there.

Upon starting a new campaign, you’ll have to run through some of the main campaign quests first. This mostly revolves around rescuing your brother from Radagos. Once you complete the quest, “Find the Hideout of Radagos’ Gang and Defeat Them”, you’ll start the first War Sails quest. This is the “Inquire at Ostican” quest, which sends you there to meet a major character in the expansion.

What to Do Before Starting the War Sails Campaign

The War Sails campaign in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord mostly revolves around your character, rather than your party. This is because anytime you’re sailing, the expansion gives you troops to use. Due to this, you won’t need to build up your own party of troops. However, you may want to level up a bit first to make certain fights easier. Most of the time, you’ll have a chance to hang back, except for maybe one quest where you’re alone. This is an early one called Break Free of Captivity.

With that said, we did the War Sails campaign early in our playthrough as a low-level character and got through it okay. The only area where you may have trouble is financing the troops given to you. While you don’t have to buy them, you will have to pay their daily wages. We haven’t experimented with what happens if you fail to. It’s possible they’ll become wounded and unable to fight. Fortunately, there are frequent moments throughout the campaign to take a break and return to it later.
